Messin' With My System
Shrimp Daddy’s seminal recording, “Messin’ With My System”. Inspired in equal measure by the sounds of Little Walter and William Clarke, “Messin’ With My System” is a must have for any blues aficionado’s library.
Shrimp’s powerful baritone voice, rich harp tone and tasty phrasing will carry the listener through tunes filled with both irony and good humour. His deep gravelly vocals, accompanied by the mesmerizing sound of his harmonica whisks you to the juke joints of Mississippi as well as the hard edge blues clubs of Chicago.
The music of the “Walters”, Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf & Muddy Waters augmented with the unforgettable sound of Butterfield is his forte! The CD is a testament to the gritty reality of the life of a true bluesman, Michael “Shrimp Daddy” Reid.

- Saturday June 9 and Sunday June 10 the Friends of Richard Newell present the tenth annual Blues With a Feeling weekend honouring the memory and music of the late Richard Newell a.k.a. King Biscuit Boy. Once again music fans can look forward to a spectacular two days of rockin’ blues and boogie.
Saturday June 9 Leander Boat Club on the Hamilton Bayfront hosts an all star concert featuring some of the hottest names in contemporary Canadian blues.
Mike “Shrimp Daddy” Reid has quickly become one of the most talented harp players in the country. In 2010 he released his debut CD, “Messin’ With My System”, produced with help of Monkey Junk front man and fellow harpmeister Steve Marriner. The work received rave reviews and the attention of blues fans nationwide resulting in Shrimp being named “Best New Act” at the 2011 Maple Blues Awards. This will be Shrimp Daddy’s first appearance at Blues With a Feeling.
Guitar Mikey McMillan is a native Hamiltonian who now makes his home in the birthplace of the blues, Clarksdale, in the Mississippi delta. In the 1980’s and 90’s he appeared many times with the King Biscuit Boy on stage and in the recording studio. He has just released a CD of brand new material, “Out of the Box” on Earwig Records featuring an all star band including former Muddy Waters sideman Bob Margolin and international harp sensation Billy Gibson. Gibson will be a part of Mikey’s set at the Leander which promises to include material from the new album along with some King Biscuit Boy favourites.
Finally the Saturday show is rounded out with Hamilton’s latest blues sensation, Steve Strongman, named this year as Canadian Blues Guitarist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards. Steve has just released his fourth CD, “A Natural Fact”, showcasing his acoustic side. His dynamic performances have earned him international recognition and he is a popular attraction at concerts and blues festivals around the world. We’re lucky and proud to have him at this year’s Blues With a Feeling.
As always the party continues on Sunday June 10 with Trickbag’s Annual Blues Cruise on Hamilton Harbour. Bayfront Park’s “Harbour Queen” becomes a floating juke joint for a three hour cruise of Hamilton Harbour that includes live music and a complimentary barbeque. Your musical hosts Trickbag are long time veterans of the Southern Ontario Blues scene and the band includes a number of former members of the King Biscuit Boy’s band. For this special event they will be joined by a number of special guests including saxman Sonny Del Rio, Guitar Mikey and keyboard ace Denis Keldie. In the past this event has been an immediate sell out and tickets are very limited. The ship casts off at 6 PM for this sunset cruise.
Once again proceeds from the weekend’s events fund an annual scholarship in Richard Newell’s name awarded to students in the music program at Mohawk College. This year’s Blues With a Feeling Weekend will offer another fitting tribute to Richard Newell a.k.a. King Biscuit Boy, Hamilton’s blues gift to the world.
Tickets are available at the Hamilton Spectator, Dr. Disc, Picks and Sticks, Chedoke Flowers and Stardust Records in Hamilton and Looney Tunes Records in Burlington beginning May 10.
